Selecting a Sink for Your Chicago Bathroom Remodel
A simple, independent sink or an elegant vanity? Choosing the right sink will depend on what the sink will be used for and which bathroom it will fit into — powder room, guest bath, or master bath.
Here is what you need to consider while choosing a sink for your Chicago bathroom remodel.
TYPE
Typically, the two best types of sinks for a busy family bathroom or master bath are the top-mount or undermount sinks. The top-mount is placed into a hole on the countertop with only the rim of the sink remaining above. An undermount, instead, is fixed under the countertop to create a seamless, flush look. Both options are ideal for families as they usually come with storage cabinets and plenty of counter space for toiletries.
Wall-mounted sinks and pedestal sinks do not take up too much space, so they’re ideal for tight spaces such as small powder rooms that aren’t regularly used, or when the sink is used just for handwashing.
If your bathroom is all about contemporary luxury, we recommend the vessel sink. We love the look of these independent pieces — they’re functional and stylish. So if you want statement-making style, the vessel sink is perfect for you.
MATERIAL
The most commonly used material for sinks is ceramic and porcelain, and for a good reason. They have a sturdy surface that’s resistant to scratches and are completely sealed so dirt can’t seep in. It’s the best choice for everyday use.
For a more glamorous look, choose luxe materials like marble, onyx, wood, or green jade. If you want an eco-friendly choice, go with natural stone or bamboo. You can even get cast iron sinks as well as glass and resin ones. Can’t make up your mind? Our designers will help you make the right decision.
SHAPE & SIZE
The most common shapes for sinks include rectangular and circular. The rectangular sinks are usually between 19 to 24 inches wide and 16 to 23 inches long. The circular sinks are typically 15 to 20 inches in diameter. All sinks are approximately 5 to 8 inches deep. A custom sink can be modeled into any shape you like, but in addition to the shape and size of the sink, you also have to consider the amount of counter space that will accommodate the sink. This part of selecting a sink is the most technical, as proportion errors can distort the look of a room, so we suggest you make this choice with a qualified designer.
COLOR
White is the classic choice, of course, but if you want to add some excitement to your bathroom, choose a colored sink. A bright pop of color will break the monotony of an all-white bathroom. If you’re working with a cream or beige bathroom, try a sink in pastel hues so it’s consistent with the look.
FAUCET FINDING
An important criterion to remember while choosing a sink is to check its faucet compatibility. While most sinks come with pre-drilled faucet holes, the vessel variety and certain under-mount models do not have faucet holes. This is because they’re designed for faucets that are placed above the sink on the wall or behind the sink on the countertop. You also need to decide whether you want a single faucet or two — for hot and cold water.
