Most Common Design Questions – Answered

While every design is unique, there are certain questions designers get asked all of the time. While there are no hard and fast rules, these answers can help serve as a guide for any questions you may have on your project.

How long does the initial consultation take?

It’s a good idea to set aside one to three hours of your consultation day. This will give your designer time to properly measure, take documentation photographs, and answer some of the questions not mentioned here. If you come to your appointment prepared with what you want your scope of work to be, questions not mentioned here, and inspiration images, this can help streamline the initial visit.

How long will my remodel take?

I wish there were a more straightforward answer to this question, but it really does depend. While we have a good idea on how long the construction aspect will last, there are far more moving parts to a remodel than most anticipate. If you have a end date in mind, a good rule of thumb is to allot yourself 2 months for a bath and 3 months for a kitchen prior to that end date to get through the whole process. Selecting your materials and finishes takes time and should not be rushed, since these are permanent fixtures. Once all of your materials have been selected and shipped, actual construction time is about 3-5 weeks for a bath and 4-7 weeks for a kitchen remodel.

Do I need to keep a bathtub for resale?

Probably the number one question recieved when remodeling a master bathroom. Typically, the answer is no, especially if you have another tub located somewhere in your home. Most buyers aren’t looking for tubs anymore. So get yourself that large walk-in shower of your dreams and get rid of that tub!

Will a designer work with my ideas?

A resounding YES! We as designers aren’t going to walk into your space and design something that isn’t perfectly tailored to you. We just have an easier time tying all of your wants and needs into a plan. We will never move forward with any material or finish selections unless you absolutely love them. We’re designing your home for you, not ourselves.

Do I need building permits/do I need to get the permit?

This depends on your scope of work. If we’re changing the function of a room, moving or removing any walls, or replacing pipes or plumbing location, then yes, it is advised that you get a building permit. If you’re doing a standard “remove and replace” then a building permit typically isn’t required.  At Chi, we take care of the permitting process for you so you don’t have to deal with the hassle.

There is no right or wrong time to start a remodel, it all depends on when you’re ready!
