The Right Art for Your Space (Art for home design)
Even the phrase “right art” is a bit of a misnomer. Art is so highly subjective and should really speak to you on an individual level. Whether it’s a one-of-a-kind painting, or a mass-produced print, as long as it makes you happy. But, to help take some of the guesswork out of adorning your walls, here are some considerations to take when decking the walls.
The Right Art for Your Space
Consider Scale:
The size of the work of art is extremely important when it comes to it looking like it belongs in your space. If you find a small print that you absolutely have to have but it’s too small for where you want to use it, consider buying a large frame and either buying a premade matte, or having one custom-made. Matting is a really inexpensive way to really up the polish on a piece of art. Conversely, an overly large piece can feel like it’s swallowing up a room. When hanging art above another piece of furnishing, consider a piece that is 75% the size of the piece it is going to be displayed above.
Consider Multiple Pieces:
Gallery walls have been a trend for some time now, and designers don’t see them going anywhere any time soon. They are a great way to fill up a larger wall. If you want a slightly more polished gallery wall, consider doing multiple rows with frames of the same size, all aligned with each other.
Another method for a gallery wall is more fluid, and can be figured out by placing all of the pieces on your floor before you start hammering away at your walls. Play around with various print sizes, frames, colors, and textures.
Consider Making Your Own:
Been on the hunt for the perfect piece but just can’t find the right one? Consider what you have at home! Anything can be art with a little bit of imagination. When thinking of how to personalize a client’s space, one of our designers reached for the client’s matchbook collection. By purchasing a shadowbox frame, you can display anything as art that might not have been previously considered.
Consider Wallpaper:
While classic wallpapers consist of a repetition of the same pattern, there are so many options for wallpaper that now come in full-on murals. This can be an absolutely stunning way to incorporate artwork into your space. Best of all? So many companies are now offering peel-and-stick options so that you’re not tied to a specific paper for any longer than you want to be. This is also an excellent option for renters.
